REI Radiant down +20 Sleeping bag or the Northface Cats meow? |
Lead | ||
|
I am looking at a few different bags. I am leaning towards the NorthFace Cats Meow +20 bag from REI but am also interested in the REI Radiant down bag. They are both rated at +20. They are with in 20.00 of each other. Has anyone used or have any feedback with either of these bags? Thanks for any feedback.

My son has a Cat's meow +20 and I don't know if his bag is simply defective or what, but every time He has gone on a backpack trip with me he's been cold. It just doesn't seem to have much insulation value. I lean towards taking a 15 degree bag most of the time and then I don't have to worry about getting cold, except in the winter when I packl my zero degree bag.

All of my bags are down filled. I find that they nicely self regulate my sleeping temperature, and I tend to sleep cold. They are all Western Mountaineering bags. I have a +20 and a -25. I LOVE Western Mountaineering!!! I was sleeping really cold in my +20 even with a bivvy sack. I called them and explained what was happening. They asked me to send it back to them with an explanation letter. They added another 1.5 oz of down into my bag at No Charge! It sleeps really warm now and I am unbelievably happy!!! I also prefer down as it's lighter and packs smaller.

I vote for the down bag. I have a buddy with the cats meow and he does like it, but it will not stack up against a down bag when it comes to insulation. I think you would be happier at night with the down, I know I would.

+2 for Western Mountaineering. My next bag for really cold will be one of theirs. I have a 20 deg. Mountain Hardwear that has been good. Goose Down unless it is going to rain. I mean it's going to rain!

Thanks for the feedback. I'm going to check out the Western Mountaineering down bags. Sounds like like a great bag.

I dont know about the REI Radiant, but I have had the same REI down bag for years and it is still going strong, (After a washing mis-adventure: http://community.gore-tex.com/reply/4900#reply-4900) I feel like there are some some higher quality sleeping bag makers, but I am just saying the REI has not let me down.

All my bags are down as well. I have a -20 degree REI bag that I bought back in 1974. I've washed it multiple times and it still is going strong. Even though I live in a rainy climate and hike a lot in the rain I've always managed to keep my down bags dry by packing them in a plastic bag within my pack. I've never gotten one wet, though they have gotten damp from condensation within a tent. Western Mountaineering is the top brand of sleeping bag on the market. It is the most expensive but the best quality.
