Posts: 15 12/21/11 00:49:17	Tags : None Has anyone else had a concussion or a ruptured eardrum? How long did it take for one or both to fully heal? Were there any long-term effects? What kinds of treatments helped? I got both last Memorial Day weekend, when I tipped over in my kayak and hit my ear on a rock, right where my brand new WSRI helmet didn't cover (they don't make ear coverage or face coverage for their small helmets, only for their large ones). I'm still having some residual effects, but Frequency Specific Microcurrent treatments have helped me get over some of the rough spots.

Posts: 240 12/25/11 10:15:16	What type of lingering effects are you having? And how serious was the concussion? Serious head injuries can leave lingering effects that last for awhile. A decent amount of material can be found online and at most doctor's offices that will detail important things to look out for. In my experience, time is the only thing that heals concussions.

Posts: 257 01/16/12 09:33:02	Suzie, I'm up to 8 concussions now (last one knocked me out and required a brain scan).... I'm accident prone. The long-term side-effects are obvious to my friends and family. Time is all that has seemed to help.... just be careful and do everything you can to prevent anymore. Some of the things I've noticed are ringing in my ear, headaches, blurred vision on occasion, and loss of short term memory. I often leave myself notes (post-it's) if something is important to remember, or ask family, friends, and co-workers to remind me about something that I need to do. I also overcompensate at work by taking copious notes when something is important. One of my co-workers has had 7 concussions and also has the ringing in the ears, migraine headaches, and short-term memory issues. You just learn to cope with the side-effects and do all that you can to prevent future injuries. Good luck. Somehow I think you may have already taken the first step..... buy the helmet with the ear/ face protection. Don't let the concussion prevent you from doing the things you love to do, just build safety and prevention into your planning next time. Never stop kayaking because of the experience. If you do, then you allow the injury/ experience to traumatize you. Good luck and get back on the water when you can, you'll be glad you did, create more great memories and we well equipped. -M

Posts: 95 03/17/12 23:37:24	I've cracked my skull and had fluid in my ear from the same injury. My first advice is buy quality helmets a wear them! As far as lingering effects, occasional ringing and headaches but they have gotten better with time. All you can do is be patient and be a proponent for helmet usage

So far, here's what's helping me: Frequency specific microcurrent Neurofeedback Getting active in ways that aren't too high-risk or too demanding: I volunteered at the local ski area and saved the backcountry for next season. That way, I could get plenty of skiing in but quit if I needed to while I re-learned my limits. I've been hiking a bit too. I've switched to reffing in roller derby, but I hope to go back to skating when I can. My main symptoms are fatigue and vertigo. The vertigo is weird -- I feel fine as long as I'm moving myself, but if something else moves me -- especially my head -- I get a free-falling feeling. If I keep doing it, I can get aggravated and have some vertigo symptoms that last for 2-3 days. The difference can be as subtle as riding a bike uphill (I'm moving the bike) vs. riding it downhill (I'm on a bike that is moving). I can ski moguls but I can't ride a bike down a gentle slope.
