So - you bc skiers - how much does it really bug you when I don't practice good conservation? Is it a slight annoyance, or something that really gets under your skin when you're out with us boarders?

Powder Conservation? |

Mark Kacmarik's photo reminded me of what MT'er Ratski always gets on my case about - conserving the pow. I gotta admit - I come from the snowboarding side of things. I like to look at the slope like a wave, go cross fall-line and look for places to do nice slash turns.

I will say that it can be frustrating to get to the top of something and see that one person has needlessly Z'ed up the whole slope. That said, it's a first-come-first-served sport.

First come first served as Aaron said. Sometimes it is good too when you snowboarders push all the snow to the side of the slopes, it makes it fun to stick really tight on the edge.

Powder Piggies! I though we were a brotherhood, bonded by our love of laying down beautiful tracks in pristine snow. If one practices powder conservation (pretty much staying close to the fall line and putting in turns close to one another on each run) there is never a track to cross and one is still essentially getting first tracks all day long. I DO care about leaving something for the next guy. To each his own, but I have to admit this isn't as annoying at snowboarders or snowshoe-rs walking up my skin track. ( This isn't a really big issue for me cause I am retired and quite often I have the whole slope to myself.) But, I am doing my best to educate the wayward Bryan on proper etiquette regarding powder farming. I must admit that now(finally) that he can actually tele ski and link turns I will be holding him to a higher standard. Watch out Bryan, I am going to be taking notes and if I find you running rampant over the slopes, I will post a special video of your best crashes.

I'm confused. Isn't the best line is usually the fall line? Why spend X amount of time to get to a place and not take full advantage of the natural slope?
By Z'ing the run you are not only shorting the next person, you are shorting your next run (and/or your ski buddy's) as well. Don't get me wrong, when i get to a run in the BC, i don't leave till its thoroughly plowed. I"m not worried about what's left for whoever comes next, as said before, if they wanted pristine they have to get it before me. But I guess i just hold myself to a higher standard than Bryan, I'd be embarassed to leave that kind of mark on the slope! |

I have never understood the long falling leaf that all the snowboarders do, or the 250 foot side to side turns. If there is powder, there is more fun in ripping down the fall line. I usually need to to keep speed anyway, but making 8's is the idea. Making turns is more fun than not making turns. That is the only way this side of wrecking that I know of to get face shots. Anyone can eat it and get a face shot. I get handfuls by making 8's!
I don't worry about the next guy. I assume I am the next guy! |
