Climb it? |

I'm sure I know the answer to this but I've had a relatively new rope in storage for about 5 years and just redisovered it in a container in the garage. Looks like new...

My opinion is this: If it is properly stored, looks and feels like it should, and has no falls on it, I run it. I get 10 years out of my rope. I don't lead much, if I do, I don't fall. In the past, I have had 2 ropes. One would take the brunt of the top rope work, while the other did everything else. When they look bad, feel kinky or twisted, have taken big falls, or are fuzzy frayed, I get a new one.
I know of a study that was done on some fixed ropes that were permanently hung in a wet, dirty cave. They saw ascenders and descender use only, by everyone! After a 10 year period they were replaced, and some were drop tested. They were over 50% of their original rating in strength. That is full of sandy mud, and twisted into furry strings. Point being, they are stronger than we think. 5 years properly stored is still good. If your going to be giving it hard on lead, I would think about a new one. Keep that dog for top rope duty. |

Nice to see that the other mountaintechs are as frugal as I am. Climb I will. |

I feel the same way, I would not lead or take big whips on the rope, but for top roping or glacier travel it would be great. Ropes are usually really durable unless they get moldy or have chemicals poured on them.
