With 10 days between jobs and a raft guide friend currently living in Stanley, Idaho and guiding the main Salmon River, we decided it was time to experience the remote beauty that is the Sawtooth Wilderness and central Idaho. Camping at a site appropriately named "Top of the World" for the duration of our adventure, we squeezed in as much as we could of what the area has to offer, including trail running, hiking, cliff jumping, rafting, fly fishing, and especially hot springs.

We started to Kayak through the Canyon about a month prior to this but had a guy in our group dislocate his shoulder and we had to hike him out. We came back once the water was lower and checked out one of the coolest canyons around. There were a few ice-water swims through pools in the gorge and just spectacular scenery in general. Oh yeah and lots of rattlesnakes on the way out.

Kayaking trip down Woods Canyon in Arizona. The creek drops over 2000ft as it comes off the Mogillon Rim. We got about 3 miles into the run when one of the guys in our group dislocated his shoulder in a sweet little drop. We ended up having to hike him out (through some cliffband) along with all the boats. That wouldn't have been a big deal but we had overnight gear in our boats so they weighed about 80 pounds each. Even with that the trip was super fun and I'm looking forward to getting back in there next winter when the creek runs again since there were some really cool drop. We went back a couple weeks later when the water was lower and hiked through the canyon. That is a separate GORE experience.

I realized it when I lost 2 friends while hiking for 24 hours.  A group of 6 went out for an easy hiking trip.  It wasn't supposed to be that long, but I went with a few in experienced people and I was still learning the ropes myself.  We set up camp and hiked to a waterfall without any additional gear.  Of course the weather wasn't that great and rain was on its way.  Two of the guys left the waterfall and ran back to the tent.  When the 4 of us returned they were no where

While working in Asia participated in 2 outstanding hikes: 1500 stairs up the Dragon's Back on Hong Kong Island then another 1500 stairs on a hill outside Seoul, Korea. Upon returning home joined my family for a spring skiing vacation in VT then finished with a Easter Brunch on the Atlantic Coast. Sea, ski and sky!

  • Erickson Mine Hike Attempt - W Erickson Mine Hike Attempt - Without Oxygen!

    • From: CaseyBuck
    • Description:
The Erickson Mine is within the boundries of Keystone Resort, but way the heck out there. After over a year of living at this altitude, I am finally adjusted pretty well. If I was not, this hike would have been implausable for me. I rode on the KAT for about 5 minute from the top of the out back lift, and from there, hiked up about another 200 feet verticle. From there, one can traverse east towards the mine until more hiking is necessary. I was accompanied part of the time by a friendly and knowledgable patroller named CD. He let me know valuable information about my solo attempt. He also requested that I take the number of the Outback Patrol HQ into my phone and call them to tell them I had made it out alive.
This was spring break on a Saturday and almost no one else is around. It is a very safe area to go, swept by patrollers at closing time, and mostly within VZW mobile phone service range.
After another series of hikes and traverses I made it to the mine and took these photos. Very cool. It was so windy at the top and hot hiking up out of the wind, my soft-shell preformed awesome.

It's just a totally different landscape than I'm used to out on the East Coast...I wish I had sick photos of the grand canyon, but I was in Tuscon for a family reunion, and only got to climb a bit during a rainstorm when the rest of my relatives were napping...but, the cacti were sweet when we all went out for a short hike, so I thought I'd post a few pics.

  • Evererst Trek Off-Season Evererst Trek Off-Season

    • From: Kathy_Dragon
    • Description:
I had a wonderful but very short 6 days trek this Feb in the Lower Everest Region...staying at comfortable teahouses that offered HEAT!! as the weather was -10 at night. Beautiful hiking weather with clear, cool days...until the snow and wind came in! Very few tourists and only local people on the trails. Wonderful Fly to LUKLA (9000’/2743m), Trek to MONJO (5-6 hrs) The exciting flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and the landing at its small mountain airstrip is something you will remember for years to come. After landing on the newly resurfaced airstrip, a warm welcome with refreshing tea, served with cookies at our Lukla lodge before commencing the trek. Pass through several villages before stopping for lunch at a beautiful spot alongside the Thada Kosi river, below the base of the Kusum Kangru Himal. The second half of the trek to Monjo should take no more than 3 hours. The next big village on the way is Phakding (8700'/2652m) but the trail passes many smaller settlements on its way. The entire walk from Lukla to Monjo is an easy hike over gently undulating hills. Warm welcome tea served with cookies and cakes await you at the Monjo lodge. Day 2 : Trek to, TASHINGA (11,023 ft / 3,450 m) 5 /6hrs. Five minutes beyond the lodge, one enters the Everest National Park, where entry formalities will have to be completed. Today will be one of the tougher days of the trip, but we take it slowly, enjoying the scenery as you climb slowly up to Namche Bazar . Along the way there are two suspension bridges to cross as you zig zag along and across the Dudh Kosi river before reaching the base of the Namche hill. The trail is well marked, comfortably broad. Walking in the cooler part of the morning, it is easier to breathe and gradually get used to the increasing altitude. After an easy-paced three hour walk, arrive at Namche Bazar (3450) the heart of the Khumbu . A well deserved break is planned over lunch and time enough to explore this interesting small town. Above Namche, the trail to Tashinga follows the classical approach to Everest. Keep to the almost level winding trail for about 2 1/2 hours before taking a slight detour off the main trail and arrive at the lodge in the next 15 minutes. Day 3 : Sherpa monastery Tengboche and on to Pangboche ( /3985 mts) The descent to the Dudh Koshi river and the gradual ascent to the Tengboche plateau (3870 m) is no more than three hours walk. On the way up to Tengboche through rhododendron forest it is quite common to be accompanied by monks, trekkers and traders. During the lunch break visit the most famous monastery in Khumbu. Bypass Deboche, where you find a nunnery and shortly thereafter walk along the Imja Drangka River to Pangboche. For most part it is a comfortable and scenic walk. Our lodge in Pangboche is located right along the trail to Everest and almost at the base of the Mt. Ama Dablam Day 4: Pamgboche to Namche, overnight Namche: Along the way cross the Mengbo and the Dudh Koshi rivers to the quiet trail on the other side. The panoramic vista with old stone houses and the absence of the usual trekkers along the way is bliss until you reach Tengboche. We continue over familiar terrain, water powered prayer wheels and prayer flags, to the village of Khumjung and on to Syangboche, At one time Syangboche was considered as an alternate airport for Lukla. Because of the seldom trodden trails, pheasants, wild chickens and thars are quite common sighting on the way to Namche. Day 5: Namche to Lukla, overnight Lukla The flights were canceled on my final day...due to high winds and snow. I was fortunate to get out once the snow fell a the morning was clear.

  • Sunrise Hike - Haleakala Natio Sunrise Hike - Haleakala National Park - Maui, HI

    • From: KK
    • Description:
My wife and I awoke at 4am, grabbed our warm layers and left our beach house on Maui's south shore and drove 10,000 feet up the dark, winding roads to the top of the Haleakala crater to watch the sunrise. We arrived to a dark, cold 35 degrees with a crescent moon illuminating the starry sky. Bundled together in a blanket we watched in awe as the black sky began to brighten in a beautiful red glow above the clouds-the colors continued to amaze us as the sun began to peek out to bring us light and warmth. We then decided to set out on a short morning hike down the sliding sands trail but little did we know our adventure became anything but short - amazed by our epic views, the incredible wildlife (silversword plants) and surrounding colors we decided to continue our hike across the crater. A trusted friend told me about how the hike continued past the Holua Cabin and back out to Park Road where we could hitchhike back up to our car at the summit. Miles of open land had passed without seeing another hiker and the partially marked trail continued with a single track that seemed to stretch for miles ahead. As the sun began to get hot, we stripped away our layers and quickly began to realize our lack of water and sunblock on this unplanned journey. We spotted the Holua Cabin in the distance and were stoked to know we were on the right path - the cabin was set in a gully surounded by peaks and had an epic view of the sea. We continued on a hard packed dirt trail surrounded by lava rock and plants that led us through a gate to a massive switchback climb up a 1500 foot rock cliff. As we gained elevation, the clouds began to roll in to bring us some much needed cooler air and we continued on with our walk in the clouds. We eventually climbed up to a parking lot with a lookout point and looked back at the beauty that we just crossed. Stoked to get back to our car and get a much needed drink, I stuck out my thumb to a number of jeeps and convertibles driven by tourists who passed without even acknowledging our existence until an old beaten down pick up truck with three locals sitting in front pulled to the shoulder - we hopped in the back and he floored it up the winding roads as it was definitely not his first time taking these turns. We let our hair blow in the wind and looked back over the beauty that we had just encountered...

Hope you guys enjoyed your trip.  Yes, Moab is a brutal place to visit in the winter.  It really shuts down (as you found out)! For future trips here are my recommendations.  My favorite place is the brewery.  Good food/good beer (it is not "the best" but, for a small SUMMER town....it is pretty good).  The best time to visit is spring and fall.  Things to do while you are in Moab:

If you go during the summer....CAMP AND PLAY in the LA Salle Mountains.

    • Description:
We had our normal January Thaw which left the trails a bit icy for a day. We were headed to Mad River Glen to do a bit of "old timey" skiing when Moe heard from a friend that they were closed. So we headed up to the notch to see what was left. It was a little hard and fast, but this just brought out the creativity in Moe when he invented his new move. And I did hit him by accident. I was headed very close to him to try and scare him, and well, he zigged when I zagged and we ended up on top of each other. These sleds are highly maneuverable and give you the confidence for such acts, even when it's a bit icy. We accomplished the new camera angle by putting the camera on a long pole and taking turns standing on a big rock at the corner, something that was suggested by Wayne (Blue coat). It looks pretty cool, we will probably do more of this.

In June of 2007, I left my job, my home, and my secure life as I knew it. The life of working during the week and playing on weekends - the outdoor weekend warrior, if you will. Once I climbed Mt. Katahdin in Maine, I followed the Appalachian Trail through 13 more states to the terminus in Georgia. Half way through in Virginia, I met my future husband, Eric Toombs. This six-month journey changed me in so many ways. I want to share it with you...

My husband and I left in June 2009 with our car loaded down with canoe, backpacks, fishing poles, and other necessities to sustain ourselves. We drove from lakes to mountains; national parks to monuments, from east to west, north to south while driving, backpacking, canoeing, fishing, camping, and hiking and just plain exploring. We finished October 5th outside of Portland, Oregon and staying over the winter making money for our return trip back east.
